The Hansa Kogge was an important type of cargo ship which appeared in the North Sea
and Baltic at the start of the 12th century. It was the main transport vessel of the Hanseatic
alliance and sailed in the Atlantic and as far as the Mediterranean Sea. These cogs had
fore and stern castles for the defense against pirates.
