An ordinary farmer cannot withstand a professional samurai warrior, even if
he is well armored and given real weapons. Nevertheless, a work force is in
great demand in wartime in many cases, including the construction of field
work and fortifications, undermining of the walls of enemy’s fortress, and
bringing arrows to archers. For this reason, teams of peasants often accompanied
the armies in military campaigns.
