Germans planned to end war with USSR by capturing Moscow before the beginning of winter. However, losses of Wehrmacht during the beginning of the campaign exceeded all losses suffered by it during previous campaigns in Europe. Blitzkrieg tactic has failed, yet winter uniforms were left behind in the rear, as they were considered unnecessary.
Wehrmacht command reported that their troops were ill-prepared for advancing during a winter and did not have an experience of waging war in winter conditions.
